January 21st: Two confessions of love.

Jan. 21st, 1986 (Age 7, Evansburg, New Hampshire)

Dear diary, today I got library books from school. The author is Beverly Cleary. The books are Ribsy and Beezus and Ramona. They’re good.

Hi! Today was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so there was no school. Thank goodness for holidays!
Tonight the movie License to Drive is going to be on TV. I’m going to record it. All day all any of the TV stations play are old movies. It’s hard to believe that when I grow up, all the movies I want to see now will be on TV all the time.
I found a new radio station that plays songs I like. I like soft rock and oldies, not heavy metal and rap. Bye!!!

Nothing at all worth writing about happened today. Our Civil War project is due on Thursday. I just started it this afternoon, but I’m almost half done. I have to make a poster about casualties of the Civil War.
My aunt and uncle are leaving tomorrow (just when I was getting used to sleeping in the playroom).

Thursday, January 21st, 1993 (Age 14, Evansburg)

Mid-term exams started yesterday. So far I've taken my algebra, history and Spanish tests. Tomorrow are English and science.
Last night I taped the MTV Inaugural Ball. I've only watched half of it, but it's great. I wish I had been there. Michael Stipe sang a song with 10,000 Maniacs, and later on Michael, Mike Mills, Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton sang a U2 song. I'd have loved to dress up in a black velvet dress and partied there. There were all ages. Even Chelsea Clinton went.

Friday, January 21st, 1994 (Age 15, Nagasaki, Japan)

Tomorrow I get to go shopping at the base for the first time in two weeks. They'd better have some new stuff for me to buy! I'm rereading The Grey King by Susan Cooper for the first time since 5th grade, when it was my favorite book.

Saturday, January 21st, 1995 (Age 16, Nagasaki)

There are now over 4,555 people dead. I was woken up around 4:00 this morning by what I thought was some sudden jolt. I heard it and felt it for a split second, and I was afraid there had been a big aftershock in Kobe. Turns out I just imagined it. I'm paranoid.
Sei is spending today and tomorrow at his aunt's house in Osaka. He said it was so refreshing to be able to go to the bathroom again. Ha ha. I'm glad he's there so he can get some rest. He said maybe he can come to Nagasaki next week. I hope so. I really want to spend some time with him, because without trains I'll have no way of getting to his house when I go back to Kobe. I miss him.

Sunday, January 21st, 1996 (Age 17, Kobe, Japan)

I finally finished my film review for English that I’ve been putting off for two weeks. It’s awful and too short, but that’s life.
I went shopping with Sei this morning and bought some burgundy colored Doc Martin boots.

Sei has been whining about me not spending the night at his place lately, so I'm going to tonight, even though I should be writing my essay. I never get any work done at his room. Especially now, because he's borrowing someone's VCR and always has Japanese videos on. I caught up on a bit of reading, but I'm still about 400 pages and one essay behind.

I called the moving company, and we're moving Friday at noon. Not much has been going on this week.

Sei and I haven't had any fights yet since he arrived back in Exton. So far, so good.

They closed the supermarket at 6:00 because it was really storming, so I got to come home early. I still need to get to the library. I sewed the ribbon around the waist of my wedding dress, but I'm wondering if I should take it to a professional seamstress to do the hem because it's a bit hard for me. Sometimes when I look at magazines I wish I had one of those fluffy white dresses, but then I try on mine and it's so pretty, I love it.

Sei and I have been looking for apartments. Nothing too serious yet, and we haven't actually gone to view any, but we've been to a couple of realtor's offices. That's the way they do it here, so you're kind of at their mercy. We saw that there was a three-bedroom available across from the next station, but when we called it was already sold. Now Sei's found a nice one on the internet, three bedrooms and a big living room for 100,000 yen a month. He'll call there tomorrow. We're really looking for a two-bedroom, but if we can find a good deal on a larger place then I don't mind paying a little extra.

I got the job in Ashiya, but it's only part-time and not many hours at that. I'll probably make around 70,000 yen a month from it. But I had a great idea about how to make up the difference. I'll write about it later.

This week at school we're teaching the kids about pets. I wanted Sei to bring his parents' dog by today, but he didn't ask his mom till the last minute and she had to go see his grandmother in the hospital, so we couldn't use the car. I'm hoping he can bring her on Thursday. I'd bring Juno but he's so heavy  in his cat carrier, and I'm sure he'd make a lot of noise on the train.

One of the teachers at our school's other branch (and the person who substituted for me back in September), suddenly got offered a job at the University of Winnipeg and she's moving out Friday. We all went to her farewell party at a French restaurant in Ashiya. The food was so good and so expensive. I'm totally wiped out.

The new 2005 soft sculpture Cabbage Patch Kids were released yesterday. This is what I've been saving up my 500 yen coins for these past two months. I called and ordered my first choice girl. Her name is Yvette Haley and she has brown eyes and brown French braids.

Sei stayed home last night but he started drinking at 4:00, so by the time he came to bed at 3:00 a.m. he was behaving very badly. He wanted to sleep with his sai (blunt daggers used for martial arts), but he kept snarling in my face and pointing them towards me like he was going to stab me. I had to wrestle them away from him. Now he's gone to his friend's house and has been drinking since at least 3:00 in the afternoon, so I told him not to bother coming back tonight. Hopefully he won't.

This is unbelievable. Kai and Yuji both told me they loved me for the first time within hours of each other. Not prompted or encouraged by me, I might add. Kai told me to my face and swears he's going to marry me. Yuji sent me a message and then didn't reply to my reply, but I'm sure he's okay. He wrote: "Branny: Love you. Very much. Apologies for not saying it till this day. I have been a cunt. Forget about me." I replied with, "Is something wrong? I'd rather not forget you, if you don't mind! Rather keep you around. Stop talking shit. I love you too!" Which I honestly do, lord knows why. As much as I like Kai, to the extreme, I could only answer his confession with "Don't say that."
