January 3rd: "Why aren't you here? I need you now!"

January 3rd, 1986 (Age 7, Somewhere in Canada)

Dear diary, today I got two dollars to spend on a souvinear. But when we got into a store called Zellers I lost one dollar. Then I didn’t get anything. Soon when we got onto the road we went through the border and I couldn’t buy anything.

Hi! I’m in a good mood right now. I haven’t a care in the world!
Tiff started her period on New Year’s Day. It’s about time! I started last March.
We changed our seats in band. Now I’m sitting in front of James and Ryan. Now I can hear what they’re saying, but I can’t see them. I don’t know which way I liked it better. At least I know that they’re looking at my back.
I want to finish this diary as soon as possible, but I have nothing to write about.
     That’s all. Bye!!!

Friday, January 3rd, 1992 (Age 13, Evansburg)

I’ve kept up with my New Year’s resolution so far, but it’s only been three days.
I keep this diary and a purple pen beside my pillow at night. If I have a good dream I want to write it down as soon as I wake up so I won’t forget any of it.
I went downtown after school today and I bought six pairs of earrings. Here’s what they look like: [Drawings of Earrings Here]

DREAM #1

I had a dream last night that one of my blue stud earrings that I’m supposed to leave in for six weeks fell out. When I put it back in it seemed to be in a different hole, because the earring point went through my ear and my jaw! I could feel it with my tongue at the side of my mouth inside.
I went to tell my mother, but I dropped the earring and it broke apart on the carpet. I couldn’t find the back or a clear round dome that was supposed to cover the blue stone.

My black and gold fish John died this morning. Actually he was just half dead. He's been sick for weeks, and I finally decided to put him out of his misery. He had a burial at sea, you might say.
I bought another Velvet Underground tape. It's not as good as my other one.
I also laid out $22.50 and got myself The Rolling Stones Illustrated History of Rock and Roll. It says something about every singer or group you could ever think of. Someday I'm going to be in a book like that.
School's in tomorrow. Back to the ol' grind.

Monday, January 3rd, 1994 (Age 15, Nagasaki, Japan)

Sarah called me to go downtown with her again today, but I didn’t feel like going. We just got back from the live music restaurant Georgetown. There was a big group of college kids in the back, and one boy was really cute.
Tomorrow we have to take our crappy rental car back to the base, but all of the other rentals are taken. I guess we’ll be taking the bus home. So much for Fukuoka!

Tuesday, January 3rd, 1995 (Age 16, Nagasaki)

Another uneventful day at home, raining outside and in. This “vacation” is winding down. Sei called around 6:00 to say he would call back at 11:00, but he never did. I figure he figures if he’s going to be late, he might as well not call at all. I wish I could go out drinking here like he does, but....
Never mind, he just called. Who cares if it is midnight, I don’t really mind waiting for him. He was drunker than usual, I could tell by his voice. He says he’s started going to a Protestant church, because for some reason his godfather told him he couldn’t be Catholic. I wonder if they had a falling-out over something he did. He started crying again, but only for a split second. He said, “Why aren’t you here? I need you now!” Then he said he was going to be strong because he’s a strong guy. I feel guilty enough. It’s not like I enjoy being with my family, Lord knows.

Wednesday, January 3rd, 1996 (Age 17, Nagasaki)

This is my last night in this house. I have no qualms about leaving it, since I don’t really live here anyway and I never liked it. In just three days I’ll be heading back to my room, back to my Sei. Finally!

Friday, January 3rd, 1997 (Age 18, Exton, New Brunswick)

It was a long ride, but I’m finally back in New Brunswick. I’m worried about Sei getting here okay, because he has to stay the night in Toronto.

Saturday, January 3rd, 1998 (Age 19, Exton)

For some reason the air outside today smells very familiar -- it smells like my grandparents' town, and somehow it's comforting.
Sei had told me that his plane was arriving here at 12:10. I put on my new skirt and took the bus to the airport. I waited nearly three hours, but he never showed up. I gave up and got on the bus again to come back, which was when I realized that it must be midnight that he's coming. There's no way he could have made it from Japan by lunchtime. I feel so stupid. I don't know if I'll tell him. Either way he'll be coming alone in a taxi, because I don't want to go out to that airport again.
It certainly does smell like Millborough! It's warm, so I've been keeping the window open all day in my little sanctuary. No one is in the apartment, but it's such a disgusting mess that I'd rather just stay in my room with Juno.
I bought a newspaper and to my delight there are all sorts of ads for good apartments to rent. I also see that the new Japanese restaurant in town is looking for waiters. I bet I can get the job, since I'll probably be the only applicant who has lived in Japan.

School starts tomorrow. I wrote a letter to Pierre – I think I forgot to mention he sent me an extremely long e-mail detailing his travels in Europe this past year. He’ll be coming back to Exton in the summer, or so he says. As for me, I’m counting down the days till my sweetheart returns. Just eight more days!

Monday, January 3rd, 2000 (Age 21, Kobe, Japan)

I called Sachiko again to see what she's up to. She lost my number as I suspected, but now she's sick. I hope I get to meet her before we both leave Japan, because I don't know when we'll have the chance again.
Sei and I went to Uniqlo and then ate lunch at Pietro's. I hadn't eaten there since Nagasaki, and the taste of the meat spaghetti gratin really brought back the memories.

I hope my brother has a safe flight back to the U.S. It was really windy today. I told him to send me an email when he gets home, since he doesn't have a phone. I called Evangeline this morning but there's nothing much going on with her. I've resigned myself to starting work tomorrow. Evangeline reminded me that it's going to be my wedding anniversary, so Sei and I had a nice dinner out at a local Italian restaurant. The last time we went there I was in high school and I didn't like it, but this time it was pretty good.

Allen has to go again already. I wish he could live in Japan -- but not in our apartment! Nearby would be good. Sei and I are on good terms now.

Friday, January 3rd, 2003 (Age 24, Kobe)

We stayed home again because it was pouring rain. I literally stayed on the computer all day, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., only breaking to eat. I finished the book I was reading last night and need something new. I promised my brother we'd go out tomorrow and I'm going to pick up some English magazines to entertain me.

We got a humidifier for the bedroom. The skin on my face has had bad break-outs all winter and I'm hoping this will help.
I called my dad but he didn't have any news.

Monday, January 3rd, 2005 (Age 26, Kobe)

On this, my last day of vacation, I went to the bookstore by myself and bought Bridget Jones’ Diary on Mandy’s recommendation, and treated myself to some new make-up. I should have stayed longer and had coffee because as soon as I got back Sei left for the bar anyway.

Sei used his otoshidama from his parents to take us to the French restaurant by the station. We’ve been there once before since we moved here but I can’t remember what the occasion was. We didn’t think there was an occasion this time, besides wanting to eat good food, but once there I remembered that it’s our sixth anniversary tomorrow of when we got our marriage license. Our dinner cost 26,000 yen in total because Sei ordered a bottle of wine also.
I’ve been having bad back problems all day. I was vacuuming and afterwards I couldn’t straighten up again. I feel more like sixty than twenty-seven. This winter I’ve started having problems with my joints freezing up.

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007 (Age 28, London, UK)

Yuji booked a hotel for us to stay in our last night. It's the Blenheim in Richmond and it's absolutely gorgeous. We meant to have an early dinner but we ended up having the longest sex ever and couldn't get out till 7:30. My high school roommate Jess' boyfriend Kerr came to have drinks with us at 8:30. It was neat seeing him after six years. Unfortunately my other high school friend Essi, who lives near London now too, couldn't make it because her back was hurting her.
