January 27th: "You have to think about your behavior."

Jan. 27th, 1986 (Age 7, Evansburg, New Hampshire)

Dear diary, I like just a few holidays. My favorite one that we have at school is Valentine’s Day. But it is next month.

My parents and my aunt and uncle have all gone to the Ramada Inn. There is a country music band playing there tonight.
The American Music Awards are on. I’ll probably only watch half of it because it doesn’t end until 11:00.
I got a letter and a picture from Cherry Marshall! She was my best friend in Maryland. Now she lives in Vermont. This is the first photograph I’ve ever gotten of her since first grade.

Jo Callendar has been calling me almost every night. I don't mind. Of all the people I'm friends with now, she's almost the only one I enjoy being around.
I had a dream last night that I shot a man I loved in the arm and the heart accidentally, but he didn't die. He was hardly even hurt and just looked tired and sad. He was bleeding though, so I took care of him, my favorite thing to dream about.

I sit on the end of my bed, staring at the row of homeschool books lined up against the wall, and the reality is staggering. All this has to be finished by when?!!

I talked to Sei on the phone for an hour tonight. He's going to have some hefty phone bill! He's still tired from last night's partying. I gather Max threw up on his carpet. It was already pretty fucked up from the last party, though.

Sei and I just stayed at his house today, but we did go out to R-Bar at night. I know I for one have had enough excitement for one weekend.

Monday, January 27th, 1997 (Age 18, Exton, New Brunswick)

I'm writing this on Tuesday. Last night, after a nice quiet evening of cuddling before I came back to my room, Sei called and accused me of having sex with other guys behind his back. I don't know where he came up with this notion so quickly. I never thought about it before, but tonight I suspect he may seriously be losing his mind. He started saying all these vicious lies about me. I had to go back over there again, and we literally fought all night -- we didn't sleep until 5:00 a.m., and we never did make up. The only thing he'll say to me now is, "You have to think about your behavior," and "You'd better start doing things right." As if I were the one causing the problems! After he fell asleep I went to the kitchen and discovered he'd drunk a whole bottle of Jack Daniels.

I just watched Clinton's State of the Union address. Current scandal aside, I still believe he's a competent president. I was behind him in '93 and I'm still behind him now.

I started my job at the supermarket. There were two guys and one other girl training with me. I was probably the most inept with the cash register. There's so much to remember.
I finally got my printer fixed, but now the new ink cartridge I bought in December is all dried up!

After work I was able to go to the private pool bar downtown to meet Yuko and some other people for a couple of hours of snooker. We never go downtown anymore, so it was a nice change.

The one-day Intensive Course went pretty well this time, and I almost enjoyed the party afterwards (almost). On the way home I bought a great big book of fairy tales in English at the bookstore in Umeda. I want to read or tell bedtime stories to my children, when I have them. Tomorrow Sei and I are going to view that apartment across from the train station. There are actually two empty in a building with only eight apartments, and those right next to each other, so I think there's probably something fishy about it. We'll see tomorrow.

I bleached my hair, so now it's about the same color it was when I graduated from high school. It's kind of a lemon yellow.
No luck on the job front. I decided not to go ahead with my plan for teaching mothers, at least for now. I'm going to have to look into working for one of the big companies like ECC or Berlitz. I don't think I'll ever make more than 200,000 yen a month again.

After work I had dinner with my former co-worker Hana Ozaki in Sannomiya. I didn't know it but since September she's been dating one of our old English Dome students, and when she said he wanted to come tonight but didn't have any money, I told her to call him and I would treat them all. I'm only rich this month because of my overtime pay, and because Sei's folks gave us an extra 50,000 yen.

Nothing to report. Sei came home very late and I couldn't eat dinner until 11:45 p.m.

Sei forgot his cell phone when he went out, but it's already midnight and he hasn't bothered to get in touch. I've had a headache all day. I ate too small a breakfast and then tried to do too much work before lunch, and it made me sick. Also I was going to make nikujaga for dinner but I forgot to buy potatoes, so there was nothing to eat. I'm going back to bed and hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

We had a video night. Sei watched both of mine, Dear Frankie and Peter Pan, and he enjoyed both! He usually doesn't watch my movies with me.

I'm staying the night at Kai's again. God help me. We're watching The Commitments on his projector. He had never seen it so I got him the DVD.
